Having long been a draw for creatives and art lovers with its infamous rugged, romantic landscapes and ethereal quality of light, by the 1920’s Western Cornwall was already a thriving bohemian Artist’s colony.

Today, this idyllic coastal hideaway is resident to the largest population of artists outside of London, naming the greats of Turner and Walter Sickert through to the enigmatic sculptural works of Barbara Hepworth amongst its extraordinary creative heritage.

Situated in the heart of old Penzance, capturing the very essence of this region now lies a unique venture that effortlessly combines this melting pot of creativity with all the charm of the UK’s most beloved coastal escape. An art gallery and boutique hotel all rolled into one, the Artist Residence is a luxury hotel that lives and breathes British Art from the minute you enter through the glorious Georgian façade.

With an uber cool laid back vibe, the reception area opens onto a relaxed shabby-chic café, adorned with paintings of the legendary Cornish landscape, all of which are for sale. Eclectic mismatched furniture adds to the intriguing and bohemian ambience, but the real magic is the 14 individually designed gallery rooms. From Graphic Prints, to 360 degree wall murals, each and every room showcases a different British artist ranging from the delicate seascapes of the Muju Room, to the vibrant Chapel Street installation, enveloping the suite in an inviting scene with flashes of summer sea turquoise and sunset orange by artist Jo Peel.

Every single item throughout the Artist Residence has been selected with meticulous attention to detail and creative thought. From the vintage carnivalesque fairground lights adorning the café to the industrial luxe touches and use of raw materials that hint of the ocean, the effect is quirky, eclectic and bounding with personality.

Even the baths in each suite are varied and unique, from heavenly rainfall showers to the nostalgic cast iron claw foot tubs of yesteryear; each and every room is uniquely designed. Their latest suite launched in autumn 2016 features the vibrant William Holland Verdigris Copper bath combining the traditional artisan theme with a contemporary unique twist. Part of the ‘living finish’ range, the natural Verdigris continues to evolve in tune with the environment, with the deep aqua tones singing of the summer Cornish sea.

Undoubtedly a characterful, boutique gem of a hotel, the Artist Residence is so much more than just a place to lay your hat. Being immersed within creativity, amongst an environment that so vibrantly celebrates the regions artistic culture is truly a pleasure, a destination and an experience within its own beautiful right.
